<div class="sectiontext" style="margin: 1em 0cm;">
<span style="color: #00b0f0; font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif";">To work with formal mathematical concepts successfully, students
must understand the concepts of classification, sorting and one-to-one
correspondence, just to name a few. It is imperative to first work with and
understand these concepts on the basis of quality that is the attributes such
as shape, size or weight before moving on to their application to general
quantity such as many, few or none. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #00b0f0; font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif";">In order for students to develop their distinctive number sense,
and a working knowledge of the above concepts, they must be exposed and interact
with their environment, exploring and manipulating, comparing, arranging and
rearranging real objects and sets of objects. </span><span style="color: #00b0f0; font-family: "Verdana Arial Sans-Serif","serif";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

practice with these concepts.</span><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></li>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">In teaching Math, I
have learnt the 4 stages of teaching. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;">

<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Century Gothic"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Century Gothic";"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">2.<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Scaffolding<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Century Gothic"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Century Gothic";"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">3.<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Providing<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt 36pt; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Century Gothic"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Century Gothic";"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">4.<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Explaining<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">It is imperative
for teachers to model first on how to find the solution to the problem sum. Give
much support where necessary. After that stage, teachers can move on to
scaffold and facilitate their teaching. Prompt the students too when need be
and providing them with the possible solutions. The last stage would be the
explaining stage. This is the high level process whereby the students are able
to do most of the problem sums independently with no more of modelling,
scaffolding and providing them but to explain what the problem is and they work
the sums on their own. Vygotsky said that learning should happen in a group. It
is beneficial that children learn in a social group. Bruner on the other hand
believed in the CPA approach. That is through Concrete – Pictorial – Abstract.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

number of men and horses.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Another point that I
learnt is that the word “similar” is not in mathematical terms. At times,
people tend to ask a similar question between 2 different objects but of a similar
property. That is wrong. For example, a teacher may show a picture of a lion
and a tiger and ask the children, “What is similar about these 2 animals?” The
answer the teacher may get is, “They are both big animals.” Is that right? Similar
in this context means one enlargement of another. So therefore, it is not
advisable to use the word similar unless you mean it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Today, Dr Yeap gave
a case scenario of a child named Tim who cannot count. As a teacher, what are
some of the strategies can one work with him so that he is able to count?<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Century Gothic"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Century Gothic";"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">1.<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Get him to rote count together. If he can’t say
it, perhaps teacher might want to say it out loud first then get him to repeat.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Century Gothic"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Century Gothic";"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">2.<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Give Tim concrete materials to work with. Here,
the teacher can do a 1 to 1 corresponding with him.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt 36pt; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Century Gothic"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Century Gothic";"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">3.<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Teacher might want to suggest aid or advice to
parents to do the necessary follow up at home as well.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">We did another
problem sum that is to estimate the number of paper clips in the bottles.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Dr Yeap gave us a bottle that contained 3
paper clips as a benchmark to do a comparison with the other bottles that
contained x number of paperclips. Benchmark is an important concept and is best
used in fraction.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">So, how did I guess
the number of paperclips in the cans…<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Wingdings; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">ü<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">I did so by moving the bottle back and forth and
shaking it from left to right <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Wingdings; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">ü<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Listening attentively to the sounds of the
paperclips.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; text-indent: -18pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Wingdings; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">ü<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Estimate the number of paperclips in the other
bottles by making comparison using the bottle that contained the 3 paperclips
as the benchmark.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif";">In today's lesson
(Monday, 1 April 2013), Dr Yeap covered the topic on the different uses of
numbers. he introduced ordinal, cardinal, rational, rote, nominal numbers and
conventions. That is quite a fair bit of information to internalize. Not that
we need to teach the kids per say but it is definitely a good information for
us teachers. Dr Yeap also did mention the properties of numbers like the odd,
even, prime, perfect and cute numbers. Cute numbers? Really? Is there such a
property? So I did my research. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif";"><o:p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"> </span></o:p></span><br />

numbers are 4 and 10. The reason is if a square can be cut into n squares of at
the most two different sizes, then n is called a cute number.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">To be an effective Math teacher, I think it is
imperative that a teacher understands how children learn math. This can be done
through observations and assessments on children to see where the teacher can
help and support them. First and foremost, teachers must be willing to learn. She needs
to possess a positive attitude, persistent and reflect on her teaching more
often than not so that she can further improve. She has to ensure the learning
environment best suits learning math and also the appropriate materials made ready for
the children to use or manipulate. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">As I went through this chapter, nothing is new
to me. As a matter of fact, when I read and reflect back, some of the ideas
shared in this chapter are some of the practices that I have been doing in my daily
lessons. During Math lesson, I do give children time to problem-solve and make
connections. I do
encourage children to be active listeners to their peers and share ideas. I also prompt them to further
investigate and discuss among their peers. Peer learning to me is another form of a strong tool where children learn better.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">All in all, this process does take time and
effort. This is something that I would like to work on. Most of the time spent
in the classroom is never enough and as teachers it is nothing new that we rush
through the lessons. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Math was my least favourite subject amongst all
the subjects that I was taught back in school. But now time has changed and
over the years, math concept has been improvised. Learning math is no longer
just the teacher standing in front of the class but instead students are entailed
to assess their own ideas and be involved in the process and problem solves the
questions together. It is crucial for children to problem solve in terms of
communicating the terms with the teacher to foster interaction and exploration
of ideas in the classroom. In this way, students learn through an active discussion.
Math is not only about numbers but it is also imperative for students to be
able to make connections to the mathematical terms as well as the world around
them. In short, math is used or integrated in most subjects. In math, students
also communicate their mathematical ideas through visual aids like charts,
graphs and diagrams. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Teachers on the on the other hand, will need to
provide an appropriate learning environment with resources that are essential
to support the learning of math. Teachers as facilitators need to have a
positive mind-set and work hand in hand with the students in going through the
process together. Teachers also need to remind students that it is alright to
make mistakes. Bottom line is we want the students to be successful and not
failing them. As teachers we want them to grow and learn, not to demoralize and
make the subject a nightmare.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Hence, I believe that learning math can be easy
and enjoyable if a teacher herself thinks that anything is possible. With the
right principles and attitude in place, I am sure not only do the students
benefit but the teacher will too. A teacher who may fear or hate math may like
it more than anyone can imagine. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
